making bootable install disc

Help Making a Bootable Install Disc

The computer I plan on installing Vista on just crashed (Login Error: The memory could not be read). Is there a way to make the install disc self-bootable so that I don't have to wipe my HDD to re-install XP first? I burnt a disc on Mac OS X using the default burning procedure (no special software), but now I'm thinking you need to burn it with Nero, etc. to get it to work properly. -- On my 4th attempt to download the monster that is Vista, on Verizon 768k DSL.
FiOS install can''''t come soon enough.

If burnt correctly, the DVD IS bootable. You need to use the burn image to disc function in your burning program.
http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm this applies to both cd and dvd.

No, you cannot make the dvd a live dvd able to run Vista directly off of the disc like Knoppix, if that is your meaning.
